I'm at the Abbey of Saint Walburga for a vacation before school starts. It's a working vacation - both with all the school prep still to be done and trying to lend a hand around the abbey as needed.
The Abbey is off the beaten track - 4 miles south of the Wyoming border, between Fort Collins, CO and Laramie, WY. While there's an image that a contemplative community just sits and prays all day, that's far from the case. Gardens, the beef cattle, retreat house, guests, gift shop, and all the works of maintaining the grounds make for a very busy schedule. Nonetheless, it is a schedule - and one that sets aside the freshest and best hours of the day for prayer and lectio divina just as St Benedict specified in his Rule.
It is a blessing to be here - again!
